Chief Instructor

Robert Mustard

8th Dan, Shihan

With over 40 years of martial arts experience, Robert Mustard (8th Dan, Shihan) is one of the most sought-after seminar leaders and teachers in the world of Aikido.

Mustard Sensei’s Aikido journey began in Toronto under Takeshi Kimeda Sensei (9th Dan) and continued to Japan at the Yoshinkan Aikido headquarters. For 10 years, he trained as a student of Gozo Shioda Kancho, founder of Yoshinkan Aikido, Takafumi Takeno Shihan, 9th Dan, and Tsutomu Chida Shihan, 8th Dan.

In 1987, Mustard Sensei completed the challenging 9-month Senshusei training course—a rigorous program mandatory for Tokyo’s Riot Police and Honbu Dojo instructors. In 1991, he was appointed Itaku Shidoin by Gozo Shioda Kancho, and remained as an instructor at the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo until he moved back to Canada in 1995.

Today, Mustard Sensei continues to dedicate his life to advancing the ideals of strong Aikido and budo. When he’s not leading seminars at dojos worldwide, he inspires the next generation of martial artists at his dojo in Burnaby, B.C., Canada.
